Chocolate Protein Balls – small snacks loaded with peanut butter, chocolate, oats and lots of protein for a quick snack you can just grab and go!
Homemade snacks are a must in our house. Things like Peanut Butter Protein Balls or Peanut Butter Protein Bars are so nice to have in the fridge to just grab and go when you need a little something, a post-workout snack or if you are just hungry!

Chocolate Protein Balls
These little protein balls only use a handful of ingredients that you mix together and then form into balls. There is no baking or baking involved. You can swap out some of the ingredients to suit your tastes or add more/different nutrition. They are therefore super customizable and ready in less than 10 minutes!
What you will need
- Creamy Peanut Butter – I like creamy best, but you could really use crunch if you wanted a bit more texture in your protein balls
- Dear – any liquid sweetener will work (agave, honey, maple syrup, etc.)
- Old fashioned oats – fast cooking work, the texture of the balls changes just a little
- chocolate protein powder – use the type you like!
- Cocoa powder without sugar
- Ground flax meal or hemp hearts
- Mini chocolate chips
How to Make Chocolate Protein Balls
Be sure to scroll down to the recipe card for full measurements and instructions!
- In a large bowl, combine all ingredients and stir until well blended and starting to stick together.
- Form about 30 equal portions and roll into balls. Place them all on a baking sheet and refrigerate for about an hour or until set and firm.
- Once the protein balls are firm, place them in an airtight container and store them in the fridge or freezer.
How long do chocolate protein balls last?
You can store the balls in an airtight container in the fridge for about 10 days. or you can FREEZE THEM! They will last about 3 months in the freezer. Just take out whatever you want and let it thaw on the counter for about an hour before eating.
Protein Bite Variations
This is where you can get creative and customize them!
- This recipe uses ground flax meal, you can add 1-2 tbsp chia seeds or hemp seeds in addition to the flax meal or instead if you want to change the nutrition.
- Adding 1-2 scoops of collagen will increase protein and give you different nutrients in those little bites.
- Want to skip the chocolate chips? No problem! Instead, mix in chopped nuts or dried fruit. Or mix and match chip flavor if desired.
- If you have peanut allergies, you can use any other nut butter, sun butter, or wow butter to make them hypoallergenic. You could even use Nutella or Cookie Butter/Biscoff spread if you wanted more of a dessert.
